Hi all,
I’ve got all the piping for the head torn apart right now in my relatively new
to me 27 Mk III – it backed up on me (literally) last weekend through the top
of the vented loop (eewww!). The hose is all pretty much permeated and
completely disgusting so I’m replacing it all. Also adding in a siphon loop
between the head pump and bowl (it’s a W-C ‘Head Mate’).
That inlet loop and the existing loop for the overboard discharge will go as
high as possible under the cabinet ... should be above the waterline even at
extreme angles of heel ... especially if I keep it close as possible to the
centerline. On an even keel the waterline is at the level of the bottom of the
door to the cabinet ... which is about an inch below the level of the bowl and
approximately the same level as the seat bottoms in the main cabin.
A Y-valve will be added. The original layout just had a tee ... one side going
up to the discharge siphon loop and one side going up to the holding tank. That
line had an inline valve in it just before discharging to the holding tank
(that valve was frozen open ... can’t budge it one bit).
So when it overflowed, I suspect the one-way valve in the Forespar siphon loop
on the discharge was stuck open. That and the fact that I found just about all
the hose clamps on the piping loose I suspect resulted in my pumping heading
out the wrong place!
I plan to put the Y-valve before the discharge siphon loop. the holding tank is
all above the waterline (even keel) and there is no way to pump that tank
overboard. Hard for me to see that being a big issue given the type of use I
suspect the boat will be getting.
All sound OK?
It appears to me that the tank has shifted a bit behind the cabinet – top has
moved towards the centerline in relation to the bottom. So the holes in the
plywood covering it don’t really line up ... to the point I can’t get the
inspection port cover off. Not sure how the tank is held in there – anyone have
a similar set-up? I suspect I’d have to take the whole cabinet apart ... a job
just a bit too big for me at this time.
Also I’ve been planning to add an automatic bilge pump to the boat and it
appears I have room to sneak a discharge hose for one beside the holding tank.
Anyone doing a side discharge? I think that would be a shorter route that under
the engine and out the stern. Comments? What size auto bilge pump are you
guys running on the 27?
