>> if the motor mounts are causing the vibration?<< Having replaced Calypso's motor mounts a few years back and recently re-aligned the engine to the prop shaft, the motor mounts will either help transmit vibration or help absorb vibration.
If the vibration is about the same in neutral or in gear and your Yanmar is running normal, new and well-designed/installed motor mounts should equal a significant improvement. If you notice extra vibration when in gear it may be that your engine/prop shaft alignment is off enough to cause the extra vibe. I installed the R&D motor mounts from PYI, Inc. and re-aligned a few years back. The R&D mounts replaced mounts that appeared to be over 20 years old (i.e. hard as a rock) and were poorly installed/modified. Immediately there was a significant improvement both at idle and underway. During our recently completed haul out which included replacing the cutlass bearing we performed a complete re-alignment. (The new cutlass bearing changed the prop shaft angle slightly towards the center of the shaft log.) We needed to lower the engine ΒΌ" and move it to starboard 3/8". Once re-launched we headed out of the marina and ran some test circles and speed runs. The combo of a new cutlass bearing and the re-alignment decreased the overall vibration to a new low, likely better than we have experienced in the last 10 years. The vibration of the Yanmar 30 is annoying and I am thinking of having the motor mounts replaced. Is there any way to determine if the motor mounts are causing the vibration?
