Best way – add 25-50 feet of light line – say ¼ inch nylon – and have THAT tied
off. It prevents an “oops” moment while being quick and easy to cut to get free
in a hurry.

Alex,

I don't like the idea of preventing a line that wants to run to not run. I
don't use stopper knots in sheets or halyards and I don't secure the end of my
anchor rode in any way. I have marked the last 50 feet or the rode very
plainly so I know when it's getting near the bitter end. If it wanted to go,
I'd let it go. I'd rather lose a sail or anchor than do serious damage to the
boat.

I suspect I'm in the minority with this opinion. However, I also suspect that
if you look inside the anchor locker of most boats, you won't find anything to
secure a rode to unless an owner added it. This would indicate the
manufacturers don't think much of securing the bitter end, either.

If I was inclined to secure the rode, I'd secure a 2 foot long piece of stout
line to a short piece of 2x4. The line would have a snap shackle or quick
release device on it. I'd attach the bitter end to the snap shackle. If the
rode paid out entirely, the 2x4 would snub up under the deck. The snap shackle
would come up through the hawse and you could release the rode from the
foredeck.

I have a question for the listers concerning the bitter end of the anchor rode.
In my case it is nylon with a thimble splice in, and the question is, should
this be attached to a hard point inside the locker, or is it considered best
practice to let it go in a “worst case” scenario?

There is no hard point in my locker and if the Listers, especially those who
anchor their boats often, would suggest one way or the other, then I will or
not install something.
