There is no reason for the flat head or the slot or aluminum. I replaced mine 
about 10 years ago after they rotted off and the pedestal came adrift on a 
heavy wind day. An interesting moment. I found some aluminum hex head bolts and 
had a machine shop taper the underside of the heads so they fit the pedestal 
holes. Today, I'd simply drop some stainless bolts in there with some Lanacoat 
or similar goop and carry on sailing. They'll last long after you move on.
