This is a stereo installation using sound exciters instead of conventional
speakers on a sailboat. The actual sound quality is much better than what
was recorded using my iPad. The sound exciters are less than 2 inches in
diameter. They are mounted to the fiberglass surface behind the seat backs
in the cockpit and are totally out of the elements. Once attached to the
fiberglass seat backs, they make the fiberglass vibrate as if it were the
speaker. There is no need to drill any holes in your boat to have good
quality sound in your cockpit. With conventional speakers, large holes have
to be drilled in your boat. The speakers and grills are often accidentally
damaged. Water can damage speakers even if they are rated "waterproof".
Sound exciters are less than 2" in diameter. They are protected from
accidental damage and water because they are mounted within the interior of
your boat. The sound exciters get attached to the fiberglass with an
aggressive foamed backed adhesive ring attached to the sound exciters. I
used 4 sound exciters made by Hiwave. model number HIAX32C20-8 for this
installation. I selected these exciters because they are made to drive 1/4"
thick glass and can handle higher power than some of the other models
available. The cost of each exciter was less than $20. I purchased mine on
line from Parts Express. Make sure you wire the exciters for the correct
ohms that your stereo system can handle.
