As I understand it the HM/GM series of Yanmar was designed with pre-combustion chambers that allow it to work fine without glow plugs. I don't understand exactly how the chambers eliminate the need for glow plugs or why every manufacturer would not employ this design.
I don't use the switch on mine but I think it was for turning the gage lights on.
