I surmise that the reason old boats get to be obscure is maintenance and fees. When the blush wears off your yacht and you face a big decision ---- paint the hull! - rebed the keel!, etc, for most folks it becomes an easier decision to go to the dealer and get yourself that big new shiny one.... and finance it!
Many folks don't budget their maintenance into the experience of owning a boat - and with yard fees starting at $50 per hour and hitting $100 for the guy who may not be very good (and may be great- no disparagement) it isn't cheap to own an old boat, particularly if you have to come up with a big sum to get the boat out of the yard, can't finance the yard fees..... I think that those of us who are on this list are 'fans'. We really like (love?) our boats, they are built well and perform well. When one gets too old or lazy (or has health problems) to keep them up and has to face the fees - the attractiveness goes away. That is when they should fess up and dump the things - get the trawler - motorhome - whatever. Not three or five years later when they have been sitting around and they are not pretty any more. And, how many boats at your marina just sit there - soaking up money with nobody using them! I am a boat jockey for our Maritime Museum and pick up and deliver a few boats each year - it is sad - when you look at a boat when the owner has lost interest or is forced to lose interest. I picked up a boat where the owner just couldn't get down to his dock any more - it had sat for at least a couple of years - cover was nearly gone, bottom was a mess, etc. It was depressing. And, just about everything on it was obsolete! On the other hand, we have a yearly auction and some of these derelicts get picked up for a song and then some ambitious new owner picks up the baton and cleans, repairs and enjoys it for a few more years. I find it difficult to relate the cost of the boat to the pleasure it gives me in so many ways. I just find it sad that our great boats are slowly slipping into obscurity, one dollar at a time. There is no logical reason that well preserved and equipped older boats should suddenly become essentially worthless. Less than 10K for a decent C&C 27 is ridiculous. Especially when a new Optimist costs over 4K and a Laser is 5 or 6. See: http://www.lasersailingdirect.com/laser.php?p=newboats Grrrr! Rich Knowles Indigo. I had a nice day yesterday cleaning Touche'. I scrubbed the winter mildew and spring pollen off the decks then washed the topsides with Awlwash. After I finished, I just stood on the pier and looked at this beautiful, wonderful boat with its gorgeous lines, the sweep of the bow sheer and the new shiny red paint. I thought back on all the wonderful sailing, cruising, racing experiences I'd had on Touche'. I thought about the afternoon before Hurricane Katrina when I'd completed the storm preparations and said "goodbye", not knowing what would be left after the storm. I decided, that after 14 years (has it been that long?) I was falling in love all over again. I can't wait to take Touche' to Pensacola and enjoy the cruise down the coast. Dennis C.
