they are total dicks to deal with...not sure what their problem is, but they
sure don't act like public servants!

+1 This was my experience returning to the US from BC in 2011 after going
around Vancouver Island. It would appear that the current hiring and training
process encourages this type of behavior.

Pre 9/11 and Homeland Security Act the US customs agents had a user friendly
approach to pleasure boats and sailors crossing the border. I once cleared
back in to the US (after a Southern Straits of Georgia race) with a Chevy
Suburban filled with drunken sailors and their duffel bags. The customs agent
looked at my ID and asked if all aboard were from the US then let us pass. I
suspect we were the 10th group of sailors returning that evening.

I strongly recommend clearing customs during normal hours at a location that
deals with pleasure boats on a regular basis. If you are returning from BC and
your arrival may be late or early, stay in BC until the customs agents have had
their first cup of coffee.

Subject: Stus-List Border Crossing From US to Canada

I thought that getting a Nexus card, which would allow us to run between Canada
and the US with only a phone call check it, would be worth doing (allowed if
everyone on board is Nexus). My wife Lynn got rejected because they found her
maiden name to be an unreported alias and I got rejected or some border thing
that I can't remember that they claimed happened in 1974. After no less that
three Freedom of Information Request to US Customs I still have no idea WTF
their talking about. And if you call them they are total dicks to deal
with...not sure what their problem is, but they sure don't act like public
servants!

So we will have to endure a pleasant stop at Poet's Cove on the way north and
ass inspections at Roche or Friday Harbor on the way back. Passports required.
I would never trust any US border official to accept anything else, even if
they said they would.
