Find a copy of Hewett Schlerreth's book Commonsense Celestial. I taught myself 
from that and it's excellent. Basically what you're doing with celestial is 
figuring out where the heavenly body is directly overhead a point on the earth 
and then you are calculating the bearing and distance to that point. Tables in 
the Nautical Almanac and HO 249 make it a simple matter of adding and 
subtracting. The really hard bit is getting a good sight...figuring exactly 
when the body is just touching the horizon.
