I second Martin's comment - rotten balsa core smell is awful and probably
oozing black.  It has an acid, chemical smell to it that is very different
from the sulphurous smell from anaerobic bacteria or the readily
recognizable mold smell.  I hope it's not...

On the other hand, I had wet (not rotten) core in the mast step area
replaced a couple of weeks ago - it didn't smell at all.
