Yes you can, and I doubt that you will be any less safe

Dwight,
Here I am all safety minded and you spoil it with common sense.
Thanks. Now I can start using that aluminum tank, by refilling it myself..

Hey Rich

How much effort you figure those tradesmen put into recertifying a 20 lb
tank.have a quick look, stamp on a new expiry date and give it a fresh paint
job or something more sophisticated like ultrasonic or hydrostatic testing?

It's getting harder and harder to find a place to get a tank refilled around
here nowadays, tank exchanges are much more common and when it comes to
getting a 5 lb tank refilled, like the ones I carry on Alianna because they
fit into my onboard propane lockers (yes the lockers have overboard drains),
good luck.the highly trained people who do refills if you do find a
convenient spot are stuck when it comes to those 5 lb tanks, and usually
they don't have the gear (scales and weights) to do 5 lb refills, they have
the gear and are trained to do the more plentiful 20 lb backyard BBQ tanks,
and that's about it.

So you can do it yourself, no problem filling a 5 lb tank or 2 from a full
20 lb tank from the exchange.saves a lot of hassle driving around to find a
spot and the associated concerns about tank expiry dates. It's not rocket
science; people have been refilling their own butane lighters for many years

Dunno about y'all down south, but up here in Kanada ALL propane work has to
be done by licensed tradesmen and installers. As Fred sez, do it right!

Really, I wouldn't try this myself; any sort of accident or explosion, and
your insurance company would refuse to pay, and rightly so. It doesn't cost
that much that I'd take the chance.

And I don't think the propane places that do this work would sell you just
the valve, in any case.

Is it possible to buy OPV valves and for a reasonably handy person to
install and then get tank and valve certified?
