The recertifying process is supposed to pressure test the tank I believe. I have two ten lb aluminum tanks that Superior propane inspected and revalved a few years back. I think it cost me about $40 a tank. I buy my propane by the pound at Costco. The tank exchange business is not cheap and they don't have small tanks. Probably the exchange method is good for average users.

So you can do it yourself, no problem filling a 5 lb tank or 2 from a full 20 lb tank from the exchange…saves a lot of hassle driving around to find a spot and the associated concerns about tank expiry dates.
