>From everything I've read or heard, the Yachtmaster certification is an excellent credential to have. Rigorous training, high performance standards, and pretty comprehensive exposure. Pretty hard and expensive to get. I understand it is almost a base requirement for very large foreign registered yachts.
That said, it still doesn't qualify you to make money in US waters or on a US flagged vessel. I'm not even sure it is good for a foreign registered commercial vessel. A couple of years ago a US company that was not part of the English organization that controls the program began to offer courses under the "Yachtmaster" name. The English organization sued and shut the US company down. IIRC, the suit was under copyright law and alleged that the US program was compromising the English standards. Merry Christmas to everyone on the list. It's 60+ outside, but the winds are light and variable today and the Christmas lights are still in place on the big boat. So I'm catching up on e-mail, reading "50 Places to Sail Before You Die", and trying to figure out if the Garmin 541s I got for Christmas in compatible with the depth transducer from the 168 installed at the helm. While I am not familiar with the current curricular, it used to comprise a rigorous class room component with test ( including morse code!!) , documented practical experience, and a practical examination ( several days at sea with an examiner) I did once enquire about an offering of the course in Newport RI but it had been cancelled Jonathan Indigo - 35mk III _______________________________________________ This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album http://www.cncphotoalbum.com CnC-List@cnc-list.com _______________________________________________ This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album http://www.cncphotoalbum.com CnC-List@cnc-list.com
