Edd, I hold a USCG 50 GRT Inland Masters with Towing Endorsement and went through the process about 6 years ago. It’s rigorous. I did it like most folks do to obtain it, through a school, in this case Sea School. You will learn quite a bit, much of which you thought you knew but were wrong about… In my case since I have never used it to make money and since I am not on the water on a regular basis, I’ve forgotten the majority of it. I have used it as the Captain of Record on a neighbor’s fishing charter boat when he accidentally let his lapse but that was the extent of it’s usefulness. I’ll echo the Fitzgerald’s take on it as regards what it takes to keep it current and its usefulness and say that the driving force for my getting it was that I kept telling my wife that I was going to get one. She finally said put up or shut up. In all honesty, I did feel a fair amount of pride when I received it. I renewed last year but am fairly certain that I too will let it lapse when the next renewal comes due. It does look nice on the wall though… Best, Dave “Ronin” C&C 37
