My ST4000+ mkII wheel pilot was not worth a pinch until I installed the rudder position sensor. I tried to avoid that installation for a long time because my previous wheel pilot did not require any input but that from the fluxgate compass to steer a straight course. Also, quarters are really tight in the aft end of my C&C 35 MKII where the rudder quadrant resides and therefore I did not really look forward to doing the rudder sensor installation. And, I was right because it was a real PITA to install the unit on my boat.
However, ever since I completed the rudder sensor installation the unit has worked very well and as an added side benefit it is really nice sometimes to have a read out of the rudder angle in degrees, and that was something that I did not anticipate would be so useful to me and now that its installed and working I must say the installation was very much worth the pain.
