My ST4000+ mkII wheel pilot was not worth a pinch until I installed the
rudder position sensor. I tried to avoid that installation for a long time
because my previous wheel pilot did not require any input but that from the
fluxgate compass to steer a straight course. Also, quarters are really
tight in the aft end of my C&C 35 MKII where the rudder quadrant resides and
therefore I did not really look forward to doing the rudder sensor
installation. And, I was right because it was a real PITA to install the
unit on my boat.

However, ever since I completed the rudder sensor installation the unit has
worked very well and as an added side benefit it is really nice sometimes to
have a read out of the rudder angle in degrees, and that was something that
I did not anticipate would be so useful to me and now that its installed and
working I must say the installation was very much worth the pain.

Bill,

The X5 does not use a rudder indicator. It has the wheel unit, a compass
and a computer.

Whoa, that is a lot pricier than my MKii of a few years ago, and no encoder?
Does that box keep track of the location of the rudder?

Ron -- unfortunately, the Simrad WP30 is no longer available. About your
only wheel pilot choice any more is the Raymarine X5:

Below-deck pilot is probably overkill (and also probably WAY out of budget)
for a 29.

I am looking for advice on getting a wheel automatic steering system
(Auto-helm) for my 1986 C&C 29 Mk 2.

We do some long distance races (Lo 300 & Susan Hood) as well as some
cruising.

Any experience that you have, positive or negative would be very helpful and
appreciated.
