When I bought my 25 I had the bottom soda blasted to remove all the old bottom paint.
While fairing the keel/hull joint I noticed some small imperfections at the aft end of the keel sump. When I opened one up so I could fill and fair it, a stream of the antifreeze that I had in the bilge started shooting out. Once the stream stopped I opened the hole up until I reached solid fibreglass. When I was finished there was about a 1” diameter hole leading directly into the bilge. It looks like there was a big air bubble there when the boat was being laid up that was missed being rolled out. I filled the area with chopped mat and epoxy until it was sealed. I wonder what the previous owners would have thought knowing that the only thing keeping them afloat for 15 years was the thickness of brittle gelcoat. They were spread out and not really concentrated in one area. The boat was originally commissioned in Maine. I suspect that it had a hard grounding at some point. I didn’t notice any stress at the back of the keel, which is where you would expect to see major damage in a grounding. This past spring when I had the bottom paint soda blasted, we found some longitudinal cracks in the gelcoat and glass on the port and starboard side in the hull, less than a foot from the keel joint. One was over two feet long. They were grounded out and glassed in. It is all faired in nicely now. Mojito has a couple of short hairline cracks at the hull / stub joint on the port side, and at the very rear of the keel. Thanks, Tim _____ No virus found in this message.
