It also could have something to do with the location of the dipstick and the
inclination of the engine for and aft as it sets in your boat. The manual
says 2.8 quarts to fill but that is probably for when the engine is sitting
level. If your engine is mounted anything like the one in my boat the
dipstick is near the forward end and the engine is tilted down towards the
rear where it connects up with the transmission. It is not sitting level
fore and aft and that affects what the dipstick sees.

There will be some oil in the filter and distributed around the engine. If
you wait half an hour or so after running the engine to give the oil time to
drain down and also change the filter, it should take the prescribed volume
of oil.

What am I doing wrong?

Before I started to change the oil for winter layup I ran the engine for 15
minutes or so, and checked the oil level (at the top line on the dip stick)
Using a brand new Jabsco oil changing pump put the plastic tube down the
dipstick hole. I pumped out what I could and measured what came out - just 2
quarts. This was confirmed because 2 quarts of be oil took the level back to
the top line on the dip stick.

The manual says that there should be 2.8 quarts in this engine.

How do I get the other 0,8 quarts out?
