I have a 1980 C&C 34, no keel shoe, owned it for about 27 years.  I like it 
without the shoe.  If my memory serves, I think Fred Hazzard (on the list) many 
years ago owned a 34 named Indigo with the added shoe.  We raced against each 
other, sometimes in heavy air, and I cannot recall any noticeable difference in 
performance.  My vote would be to spend the 500 pounds on a couple of crew 
members who can grind and then sit on the rail if you need to flatten out the 
boat; and for an added bonus those big guys always bring good beer.
