How about the stuffing box? When I bought my current boat, it dripped a little more than normal in neutral, but really opened up when the diesel was in gear. It sprayed the entire engine compartment.

Possibly there's more vibration when the boat's in gear?

That is, when you're at the dock at modest rpm, there's not enough
shaking going on to spring a leak. Then when you've got it in gear at
2800 or so, you might just crack a seal or a bolt that's backed itself
off a turn or two.

Just an idea.

Btw - I never close the engine seacock unless I'm poking around in the
strainer. To me, the risk of forgetting to re-open it exceeds the
risk of it failing when I'm away from the boat.

Cheers
Colin

The engine 3GMF

Came in under engine after finishing a race on Sunday and when I went to
shut the seacock I noticed quite a bit if white residue (salt?) under the
heat exchanger (forward end) and also significant and be rust on the
forward starboard side engine mount. This was definitely not the case on
Wednesday ( previous use)

I had a mechanically experienced friend look at the area, both when the
engine was cold, and then ran the engine for quite a while (at least 1o
minutes). Absolutely no signs of any leaks, so I am at a loss

Any suggestions from the wise folks in this list?
