Steve,

Having comfortable PFDs will go a long way towards making people wear them.
If they are difficult to put on and uncomfortable to wear, they will get
left below. The first time I wore one (recently) was during a singlehanded
race where they were required. I wore a cheap orange one around my neck for
most of the day and it chafed and was unbearable. I now own a nice
inflatable with a built-in harness. It wears well and doesn't restrict my
movements.

We now see the pros on TV wearing life vests and helmets (AC sailors). I
wonder how long it will be before we all start wearing helmets? I never
wore one on a bike, but now everybody who rides more than a block or two
wears one. It's just the smart thing to do.

Sorry to hear of yet another boating fatality.

We had a couple more here on Lake Erie and Lake Huron this weekend.

None of the bodies recovered so far this year were wearing PFDs.

They are worn on my boat.

I have noticed that the passengers and crew almost invariably follow the
lead of whatever the skipper does in this respect.

It really is up to us to set an example.
