Sailing on the US west coast and around the Pacific has spoiled me. I get nervous if the depth drops below 30'. Puget Sound is often 300' to 600' deep. In the San Juan's and BC waters there are many places you could sail up to a cliff and be in 100' of water.
I read and look at pictures of those thin water places like the Chesapeake and the Bahamas and get cold chills running up my back. Calypso draws 71/2 feet and I want enough extra depth that a 4' obstruction would not be a problem. Owing to the +-12' tides we have around here if you anchor at high tide in 30' it will be closing in on 20' or less at low tide, typically at 0'dark 30. Add in current or wind against the current and the anchored boat may wander over an uncharted obstruction. (the fabled bump in the night) Hence my preference for deeper waters.
