FYI: The previous owner removed the babystay on our 34R. He left the deck mounted track and I found the car in a spare parts box. After discussing the baby stay wth several experts, I decided to forego the system and removed all of the hardware from the deck; the track and car and turning blocks, and filled all of the holes, so I have a nice smooth deck. But my rig has runners and checkstays.
On our 34R (35.5 LOA) they used -8 rod which has a breaking load of 8200#, so that is what I would design to. You could use 1/4" amsteel at 8600# strength or 5/16" amsteel at 13,700# to allow some extra strength for the eyesplice. Amsteel is easy to splice, you'll need about 30" extra at each end to splice the eye and get a turnbuckle rated for 8200#, size 3/8" should do. The first one will take some time figuring out, but the rest are easy. Checkout the instructions on the web, http://www.samsonrope.com/site_files/12S_C1_EyeSpl.pdf Use a coat hanger as a fish instead of fids, and you'll see faster results. The beauty of this splice, is you can make the line a little long and pull it apart and redo it to make it shorter, by burying more line. The turnbuckle is needed for final tension. You could use a lashing, but I like the turnbuckle with an eye.
