Sat on Yacht clubs anchorage committee for a few years and had a lot of problems with those boats insured by Progressive. Went as far as recommending to membership that they should be very careful in choosing them for boat insurance. Boat US seems to do a good job and my experiece with them when my boat was damaged was very good. Sometimes what looks like a great deal may end up presenting more problems than the lower premium price is worth. Moondance (C&C 29 MKI) is going to new owners over the weekend. I've recommended that they go with Boat US for insurance and towing but, as newbies they think then can save a few bucks. I will try and talk them into getting reasonable coverage which covers the cost of removal. Our club has 2/3 boats a year which end up going ashore and are costly to remove or refloat.

At the time, I was insured by State Farm. Under the policy, their obligation to remove the wreck was dollar limited and would not have been sufficient to pay for the wreck removal had the State of Louisiana not removed her almost 1 year later. On the other hand, 3 weeks after the storm, Boat US had a contractor with a crane barge in the harbor identifying and removing the wrecks of the boats they insured. I am now insured by Boat US as the New Orleans owned harbor required that the harbor and city be named as additional insureds under the policy for purposes of liability coverage. State Farm flatly would not name the harbor on the policy. Progressive's coverage of an additional insured did not, in my opinion, fulfill the harbor's requirements. Moral - Read the policies and know what your are getting for your premium. As unpleasant as the idea of wreck removal is, adequate coverage is essential. You get what you pay for.
