Hi there, it looks like you got some excellent hardware advice. I just wanted to say I have been using owncloud for quite a while now with no complaints. However, if I was to start now I would be looking more at https://nextcloud.com/
They are the original developers and have forked the project http://www.zdnet.com/article/nextcloud-releases-owncloud-fork-ahead-of-schedule/ For a family operation you really can do plenty with a core duo and little ram, we stream and do all sorts on the relic I use with no issues at all.
