Calibre will read epub format books, so if it says that your file is
corrupt then that is what the problem is.

.mobi is only really supported by kindle, though I think that Calibre can
convert that format into another.

Like John, I have a preference for DRM free content, so I buy all of my
technical ebooks from either Oreilly or Packt.

For non-technical books my choices are much more limited.  The gutenburg
project is a great source of public domain works (which I can still load
onto my kindle).  Unfortunately most of the time the really good books are
locked behind a DRM scheme which makes the whole situation more complicated
than it needs to be.  With the constant lengthening of copyright in the US,
we have not had a great of work released into the public domain for the
past several generations.
