Hi Folks, I'm having a lot of trouble with ubuntu 16.04 on my Intel NUC. It started with the number 5 being inserted an indefinite number of times in the place where a password should go in an application. I was able to stop this infinite loop by restarting.
A few days later booting would proceed to the point where I had to enter my password to access the desktop. Instead of there being a space for my password the word "Retry" appeared and the message "System is booting up. See pam_nologin (8)" in red letters appeared. This appeared for Ubuntu, Gnome, Gnome Flashback (Compiz) and Gnome Flashback (Metacity). Here too rebooting solved the problem----for a few days. Now after a few more days, when I turn on the computer I get the Intel slogan as usual and instruction regarding f2, f7, f10 etc followed by a black screen with a pulsing short white bar in the top left corner. That's as far as booting goes! I would appreciate advice on how to solve this (last) problem. Robin
