I don't know a shop that has a good rep for understanding Linux. You could try the following: 1. verify the .iso that you created the boot media from is not corrupted by running md5sum against the .iso file and comparing the result to the published md5sum from the download site. >md5sum ubuntu-????????????.iso 2. burning the boot dvd at a low speed (6x) to minimise chance of burn error. 3. boot the live dvd into "legacy" video mode. Sometimes Linux will boot but the video disappears so it looks like it hung. If the live boot works you can use various X tools to see what video settings work.
I have found the HP Pavillion on board video to be finicky. Often it is simpler to add a cheap video card that works well with Linux rather than delve into the X configuration technicalities. There are proprietary drivers from Nvidia for Linux, but it has been a long time since I have set these up and I think the opensource nouveau drivers work well now but I have no experience. Good luck. It works somewhat with the live session but will not install. It seems to hang on ./casper/filesystem.squashfs then errors found in 1 files! I took it to Staples and they said the hardware checked out. Here is my setup HP pavilion 500 AMD A8 7600 8 GB Memory NVIDIA GeForce GT 705 1 TB SuperMultiDVD Burner Drive My thought is that I could try a USB intsall rather than the DVD. I have read some of the forums on this problem and it seems beyond my capabilities. Is there a recommended shop?
