Well, good to hear some good news. I don't the OS days are over, not even by a
long shot, the lock-down of hardware with the UEFI system, and the signiture
and authorization systems around it has been and remains very problematic, and
i agree, we need to do stuff to support and cater for the Linux user, small and
large alike. I think we shall come up with some ways to bring on more
participation, partly by lowering the bar a bit, but also by enabling
collaborative work. Hardware compatibility has diminished in significance along
the years, today, you can confidently buy a laptop or a desktop, and chances
are, your favourite Linux is just going to work on it just fine. Social events,
are also something we should look into, just getting together and discussing
Linux related stuff..

"Age of the OS" as in no new OS's? Probably not. But Linux isn't a spring
chicken anymore. A lot of Very Large Companies use it (and make kajillions of
dollars with it). Were we doing stuff in CLUG because of a specific love of the
Linux kernel/distributions, because we wanted to learn about free software, or
because it's fun to be the underdog?

Open Source doesn't give companies the willies like it used to. There are still
barriers, sure, but saying "let's use MySQL" is not going to get you marched
out the door (and if it does, your employer probably has bigger issues). Heck,
Cisco just open-sourced Chez Scheme ( https://github.com/cisco/chezscheme ),
which has been closed-source since 1985.

The next big fight won't be with Microsoft, but for an internet that's not
owned by Google and Facebook. Maybe CLUG can help getting people to homestead
their own services and advocate not just for local autonomy (their computer),
but the ability to freely communicate with other people. Or maybe do something
about the walled-garden mobile space, which is what most young people use
exclusively these days.

Sorry I'm a little late on this one, haven't checked my mailing list folder in
a while.

Linux has been good to me, but I'm mostly using the BSDs for personal stuff
these days. Systemd was a real turnoff (its implementation, in addition to how
it kind of got jammed down everyone's throat), and the quality control in the
userland is frankly not that good anymore (or maybe I've just gotten pickier
;-).

Yes, things are *much* better these days for the average desktop Linux user. I
just bought a bunch of games on Steam today that run on Linux. Awesome!
Installations for the most part 'just work,' and you can find hardware at
London Drugs that advertises Linux compatibility. Heck, they're jamming a Linux
kernel compatibility layer in Windows. The NYSE has been running on Red Hat for
several years now. We have Raspberry Pi computers that fit in your pocket, cost
50 bucks, and run Debian.

We live in the future. It's pretty great.

But the sense of discovery (at least for me) in Linux has been kind of replaced
with "ah heck, they broke this crap again." And the GPL has kind of become a
pain; I'd really like to use Dtrace and ZFS without performing brain surgery
(or using Oracle Linux). So help me, I want to start a distro that replaces the
GNU toolchain with BSD-licensed parts out of spite (if this already exists,
someone please let me know!)

Anyways, I'm rambling. CLUG had a shared goal for a long time - "anyone who
wants to use Linux can, and everyone is aware of the choice." It'll be 25 years
of the Linux kernel this year, and as advocates we've done a pretty decent job.
CLUG needs new goals. People come and go, but a good shared vision is an
effective driver.

I liked chatting over beer and discussing technical minutia. If someone does
that, I'll probably show up ;-)

Let's face it, we are struggling to scrape by, our multiple decades worth of
activism and experience amounts to nothing more than a minimum wage job, if we
are lucky. I am out of town and out of province, chasing odd jobs, so i count
myself lucky here. We could make a difference, but the big question is: do we
have the will and the energy to make that difference?

Cheers

It would be great if clug has presentations again but it
doesn't seem likely to happen. I am at least a year
away from any kind of presentation and one presentation
won't do much on its own.

I would go to presentations if we had them.

So I am not optimistic.

Can we put the clug into some kind of sleep mode.
Perhaps in a few years some people will come along
who want to join and have things to say and presentations
to give.

That's my opinion. Sorry if it doesn't help much.
