I've played a little with Own Cloud and like it's potential as a private
substitute for DropBox and it's ilk.
From what I recall, when you set up Own Cloud you specify where the
data is to be stored. Connecting to a NAS box for storage is not really
supported in this sense - at least not when I looked at it. To
accomplish this you could do an SMB mount via your FSTAB on the base
system running Own Cloud. Then when you select the storage location,
you just select the mounted directory. The end result being your Own
Cloud data stored on the NAS, but Own Cloud doesn't know anything about
the NAS at all (and therefore does not need any fancy configuration...)
I do recall mention in the docs that suggested the NAS drive could be
set up the way you are thinking, but I also saw questions similar to
yours and the answer was almost always to use the FSTAB mounts as it is
much easier to set up and better understood/documented.
Regarding backups, I used to worry about backing up my development
work. While I still take reasonable precautions, I pretty much ignore
backups these days (for my dev code at least) as everything goes into a
Git repository and that repository is hosted on a remote server (like
BitBucket, GitHub, etc.) AND the "production" and "staging" code is
stored on yet another server. So in addition to my normal development
box, my code is "backed up" on many servers in a natural (and
accessible) manner. There's no reason something similar can't be set up
with normal office documents, IMO.
My thoughts...

Hi All,
Thought I would ask some thoughts about how to go about the following.
I have recently built a fresh CentOS server install that I intend to
install OpenLDAP on & act as a PDC. Similar to a Windows Servers with
users authenticating against AD. I also have a DNS-323 NAS that
currently has 2 x 2TB drives in a mirror that I am storing data on &
backing up manually.
I was thinking of installing OwnCloud on the server with the NAS being
the repository for the data. I then want to be able to access data via
smartphones or remotely (i.e. web, desktop OS, etc.). I would also like
to set up some sort of synching mechanisms between the various clients
(i.e. smartphone, laptop, etc.) so that for example I am out somewhere
working on something...I come home & the data is moved to the NAS & the
drives (Librari, Media, etc.) on the NAS mount for access. Eventually I
am planning to have what I am hoping will be a live synching backup to
anther disk in the house & an on demand backup of the backup that will
be taken offsite & doen every week or so.
I have been looking around & I don't think I have found the right
information yet, bit I am wondering if I am on the right track.
My thinking is that is should be as simple as installing OC on the
CentOS box & then point it towards the NAS. Am I on the right track or
do I need to isntall OC on the NAS itself as suggested by the following
article:
https://panmen.wordpress.com/2013/01/01/installing-owncloud-to-a-dns-320-nas/
I can see the end goal of what I want to do...but what I am having
troubles with is envisioning the proper steps in the proper order.
Any ideas or suggestions...specific steps....etc. And just to make
things interesting....any ideas about encrytion in relatin to this whole
thing. Should I be encrypting the NAS, the backup & the external. If
so...suggestions for tools (for exmaple TrueCrypt)?
