Hi All,

Sep 4, 2013 Monthy Meeting
Please see clug events blog at http://clug.ca

Jacob has agreed to give a talk at our next Calgary Linux users.
The topic will be about building the world’s best river surfing wave
hardware and freely sharing that knowledge.

Who in CLUG is interested in this international project?

I was contacted by Jacob Quinlan
Communications Advisor
Student and Enrolment Services
University of Calgary
in regards to an Open Source CFD project related to River Wave Design
and the Alberta River Surfing Association

See you at the meeting! I think you will find Jacob's enthusiasm
contagious.
====
END OF BRIEF MODE :)

I did not realize the project is under construction so soon.
For this hardware, if already built, we could still try to compare the
simulation results with this real world case. Then later perfect the use
of simulation as aid to design.

It would be best if any of those interested meet/talk at an earlier
date.
Just to try it out, I installed 'code-saturne' - General purpose
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software on my workstation today. Is
this the program you were referring to?
If so it appears easy to install.
Running it will require reading the documentation

example:
For Debian stable it appears I get version number 2.1.7-1 of
code_saturne
:~$ code_saturne gui
gives a GUI
asking for help gives you:
File /usr/share/doc/code_saturne/user.pdf not found.
File /usr/share/doc/code_saturne/tutorial.pdf not found.
That seems to be because the files were put here:
evince /usr/share/doc/code-saturne-doc/user.pdf is 205 pages manual
and here:
evince /usr/share/doc/code-saturne-doc/tutorial.pdf is 120 pages manual
theory.pdf is 337 pages
refcard.pdf is one page
example data

The Web site talks about more recent versions 3.0 stable and 3.1

Applying the program to practical cases may be fairly strait forward,
but require some work of a technical nature (at least following the
tutorial) Maybe getting the data input in a way the program will give
you some answers. Also there are more CDF programs to pick from, yet I
do not have comparisons handy.

So, the way I seem to understand things. Installing is only the start,
not to mention picking the right Linux install to run an up to date
version. (also dialing back to simple weir cases, since it is a very
complex and general purpose program)

foot note:
I was using Debian wheezy (stable)
Have not yet tried
jessie (testing) amd64 yet nor Ubuntu etc

Who in CLUG is interested in this international project? I have peeked
at Fluid Dynamics in the past out of interest, but it was not my main
field.

Who else may be up to the challenge?

See you at the meeting! I think you will find Jacob's enthusiasm
contagious.
