for a distro that is marketed for production environments.

We need to be clear here - the dependency problem occurred due to a previously failed upgrade which was caused when my server ran out of room on the /boot partition. This is NOT the distro's fault directly, in this particular case.

We may consider it the distro's fault indirectly for a couple of reasons:
1) The distro chose a 300 MB /boot partition when it installed (I got lazy and didn't reset the partitions to something sane). 2) The distro does not clean up old kernels automatically. Rather it leaves them sitting there un-used. 3) The distro (or more specifically the package manager) does not seem to be checking disk space before doing an installation/upgrade.

BUT, that list of issues could easily apply to any distro I've worked with over the past 10+ years.

Otherwise, I agree with your sentiments towards more stable systems. This is why I've installed the LTS version on this server. But Ubuntu in general has been falling out of favor with me over the past year or so. My next desktop install likely will not be a Ubuntu based system - They continually mess up on seeing or using my graphics card properly, which also leads to some rather arbitrary disappointments - like unstable WebGL in Chrome (if it works at all).

My thoughts...
