Glad it works! Now I get what you were trying to do, it did not make sense to me before. As William said /sys should not actually write anything out to disk.
If you get curious, the Voyage distro I use is just Debian under the hood, with some customizations to have it run read-only by default. You might be able to adapt their customizations. It is also tiny since there is no GUI by default. The magic that The only downside is that it is x86/x86_64 only. I have also run Ubuntu from a USB flash drive, I used ext2 as the file system and did not use a swap partition (on the flash drive anyway). I retired the computer before the flash drive wore out (it held the OS of my file server at home for a couple of years). Sorry I was not of more help sooner.
