I have had a couple of net books and had great luck with Ubuntu Net Book, Ubuntu Remix and Easy Peasy. None of the net books have hard drives in them, I have booted into the Ubuntu world from usb sticks and SD Cards as well. I like the SD Cards 'cause they don't stick out any where when you use them. The How To's for doing this are abundant on the internet. Good luck on this adventure.
