Change is inevitable, in all aspects of life as far as I can see.

Anyway, with KDE 4.4 I found that I like Dolphin after all. It seems
that Konqueror was designed to be a browser and the file management
tasks were bolted on. I initially was annoyed but after having used 4.4
for a month now, I can appreciate where the project is heading and I
actually like these design decisions (these _were_ design decisions
based on HMI research and workflow analysis).

While I will say that 4.4 is still not 100% of the way to replacing
3.5.x, for me it is 90% of the way there (and in many ways I like 4.4
better than the 3.x line).

I can add icons, even to gtk apps (in fact I have the
gnome-appearance-properties icon on my panel), forward and back works
for me in Dolphin and Konqueror. I am using the KDE PPA on Ubuntu 9.10
on my main laptop, and the default KDE on my old laptop (currently
running the Lucid aka 10.04 beta). I am very happy, in fact I have now
switched back from Gnome.

One thing I will say, if you want to use KDE and Ubuntu, do *not* use
Kubuntu aka the KDE that ships with Ubuntu. Ubuntu and their rigid
release schedule and unwillingness to update a release once it is done
does not fit well with the current state of KDE 4. My suggestion is to
either build it yourself, find a PPA of the version that you like (there
are PPAs for 3.5.x and for 4.x), or switch to a distribution that is a
better fit with KDE.

Good bad or indifferent, it simply is what it is.
