I would use the version of Eclipse from the Eclipse web site instead of the one packaged in Ubuntu. Of course I probably just KDevelop or more likely vim.
I agree - using the version from the Eclipse site is as simple as download, decompress, and then execute the "eclipse" file in the extracted directory (i.e. click on it, script it, etc.). Assuming your Java environment is properly set up.
Eclipse in the repositories is outdated (usually a version or two behind), and has causes some grief if you try to extend eclipse with a development (PDT, etc...). Not a lot of grief, but using a local copy is easier.
I find that I work with eclipse for a while, move back to a simple text editor (Kate, in my case), and then a year or two later I try eclipse again. I've just started my 3rd foray into eclipse for some PHP development. I'm not seeing a lot of benefits (yet) over the simple text editor. Then again, I'm pretty much a lone developer - Eclipse is intended for team environments.
BTW, The latest Eclipse "package" version (Galileo) was just released today.
