It did it on both... but the link the neil sent led me to the right
path....as long as there is a primary key in the db you are ok....you can
set the pkey to not require input and hide in the table....

Odd.

I just installed Base (wasn't there), and told it to create a new 
database (native base file, stored under my home directory).  Then used 
design view to create a table.  Then opened the table and added records. 
  Didn't run into any issues...

Maybe try removing/reinstalling Base?  Perhaps you are missing a 
library?  (is this a windows or linux box?)
