Shortly after I sent my first message I found the hardware manual.  I 
did try a few things in ot bt nothing seemed to work.  I will have to 
revisit tomorrow or something.  I did try and google some other sources, 
but it ranges from hacking it thru a homemade serial patch kit to a boot 
cd to call ibm to basically saying "screw it"

What did make sense with the power on password was how you are supposed 
to power it up and let it run thru post when the battery and backup 
battery are removed.  Befiore anyones say that ac cord....well them kind 
of defeats the purose or removing the batteries....
