I use a couple of RBLs to cut down on bandwidth, no proxy required.
Basically, before accepting the body of a message your MTA should check
the connecting IP against a couple of different RBLs, if there is a
match then your MTA should bounce the message.  This is really
lightweight on my end.

I also do grey listing which does require an SQL db, but I don't need it
for the RBL side.

Of course, this does not help you if you don't manage your own MTA.
