Thanks Gustin, I already tried xorg.conf (ah ha! I'm gettin more resourceful), and indeed, it says 1280x800, yet, its not an option in Screen Resolution.

Perhaps it really is in 1280x800 and its lying?

to adjust the power management of your laptop as well as hard disk
tuning among other things.

It should be obvious what to do, but here is an example from my laptop:

SubSection     "Display"
        Depth       24
        Modes      "1280x800" "1024x768" "800x600"
    EndSubSection

If  you are using the regular vesa driver, I do not believe that it
supports "weird" resolutions.  Almost all of the other drivers (the
intel ones, nvidia, ati etc.) should support this resolution.

I also use klaptop to display the battery charge and to suspend the machine.
