(sorry, posted this yesterday, but my mail server bounced it... still working
out some kinks with the IMAP setup...)

For newer Linux users' the mainstream distros are the ones to stick with.
That includes the 3 you listed. There seems to be good support of Suse on
this list, if that helps with your decision any.

With regards to hardware damage, there was one instance a year or two ago
where an LG cd drive had a problem with Linux. The drivers/hardware wasn't
designed quite right, and damage occured when the device was used under Linux.
This is the only case that I know of where "Linux" may be the cause of
hardware damage. There's always a chance with monitors to cause damage if the
refresh rate is set too high, or the device properties are not set properly.
But this is a user error that can happen almost as easily under other OSes.
Most times this is a non-issue though - especially if you are sticking with
one of the mainstream distros. When you get to the point of customizing Linux
to your needs/desires, you might run into this, but you'll likely also have
enough know-how by then to avoid these types of pitfalls.

If you'd like, CLUG is having an Installfest in a couple of weeks. This is
where you can bring your box, and get help installing Linux on it - whatever
flavor you'd like. You can also see the other distros, and talk about the
pros/cons of each...
Also, I have a Suse 9.3 DVD I can burn for you or make the ISO available. Let
me know if you want it. You can find some Linux ISOs at mirror.clug.ca.
