I disagree with you on this one Semir, (I believe we've disputed over this before.) The smaller CLUG regular installfests would NOT be replaced with the BIG ANNUAL CLUGfest I was thinking of. The smaller installfests would still exist but directed at the group as a whole. What I have in mind is that once a year there will be a large get together that would be more advertised and overall bigger than all other CLUG events, (I've noted that most other clubs and groups have one or two big annual events.)
One example is the UofC DOA club, (the SU amine club,) they have week and monthly meetings and at times had special events similiar to our Installfests. What they have been most successful with is their Otafest, where once a year they have a massive gathering where several events such as auctions, showings, sales... are done in a weekend. People from Edmonton, Reed Deer and event from Saskatchewan come tot the event. With the wider Linux base why can't we do that?
I would also like to note that sponsors tend to notice annual events and are more willing to give during these times than the regular hand out.
I especially believe that the single large event would catch more peoples attention, look at the Stampede, held 11 days annually and nothing beats the attendance and interest that it holds.
Once again having the big event would not negate the other events. I would say that due to the nature of CLUG holding the event solely outdoors is a bad idea. First, if computers are to be set up for the event the elements would make operating the computer extremely difficult. In the case of a sunny day the monitor would have glare and would be harder to see items on the screen. In the case of a rainy day... well lets just say water and computers don't mix. All electronics should be held indoors should be the rule of thumb. BBQ and maybe presentations or sales tables might be a good way to have the event have some outdoor activities as well. For the event to succeed their must be a committee formed dedicated the event. That means getting sponsors, advertising, organizing events, costs and staffing all needs to be handled by the committee. Planning is required in these types of events and unlike the standard Installfest, having people come in a set things up in a chaotic order would be bad.
Transportation should be considered. LRT access would be best. Maybe getting Devry, UofC or SAIT to rent us a, (cheap) larger space would be be possible, (this would have to be done by the CLUG Admin.)
I think we should strive for once a year. Definatly, other LUGs, community sponsors, CUUG and any other related groups should be conacted, especially the small town groups.
Once again the they would not negate. Also if proper advertsing can be done well before the event I don't see a reason why people that are interested wouldn't mark it off their calendars.
I see your $0.02 CAD and raise you $0.02 CAD
This is good.
We should have multiple events, mainly, this helps more people to
get to the installfests. A single event will inevitable leave a large (too
large) portion of the willing to come and get installed away due to one
reason or another. Multiple small events, will catch more people attention,
and would let them come to the next event, and that would be sooner than next
year. The tent is a great idea for the summer/good weather. And it will sure
get heads turning.

The large (annual) event should not obscure or negate the multiple small
events, but should supplement them. I do think, that it is entirely possible
to organize a major event based on generous donations from our sponsors and
members, this includes volunteer time and effort. I would think a fair of
some sorts, in a large public space would be nice. Needles to say, there has
to be great flexibility with an outdoor event, specially regarding the
weather.

I would see the possibility of a social event in the outdoor platform, and the
technical events would take place somewhere else nearby, in an indoors
setting. Shuttle service would also be possible, to and from the 2 places.
Naturally a large event like this does require great amount of work and
coordination.
Transportation should be considered. LRT access would be best. Maybe getting Devry, UofC or SAIT to rent us a, (cheap) larger space would be be possible, (this would have to be done by the CLUG Admin.)
And again, what about just organizing a conference of oss/Linux with many
international contributers doing the presentations ... whole development
teams could be on the show ... This would be a high profile event, maybe we
would only be able to organize one every 2 years. But would defiantly rise
the profile of clug and oss in the area. I would even see CLUG working
closely with other Lugs in the region to accomplish this.
I think we should strive for once a year. Definatly, other LUGs, community sponsors, CUUG and any other related groups should be conacted, especially the small town groups.
Again, a single large event, and nothing else, is not very good. People miss
the event, they forget, the next train is too long. We must have multiple
smaller events, i would even say, if resources don't permit, at the price of
not having a major event.
Once again the they would not negate. Also if proper advertsing can be done well before the event I don't see a reason why people that are interested wouldn't mark it off their calendars.
