are you refrering to the fact that the kernel is written in C, or that your
friend is a kernel hacker? if the former, then:

o the recent spate of kernel holes (how many so far this year??) makes my
point quite nicely

o we were talking about CGIs, not kernels. there are some things for which C
(and nearly any other given language) are very appropriate for. there are
things they aren't. bulldozers are great for leveling off a plot of land, but
sure suck for scooping ice cream with. i really don't have a problem with
something like an OS kernel written in C, but writing CGIs in it isn't
exactly a brainwave.

if your C-slinging friend is a kernel hacker and that's somehow supposed to
imbue his arguments with validity.. well.. the kernel isn't magic, nor are
the people who write it. not even Linus.

again, i'd love to hear his rational for choosing C for CGIs. i stand by what
i said that C is much more dangerous due to memory management issues. this
doesn't mean it isn't quite powerful and elegant, as well. it's just
dangerous.

right tool, right job.
