are you refrering to the fact that the kernel is written in C, or that your friend is a kernel hacker? if the former, then: o the recent spate of kernel holes (how many so far this year??) makes my point quite nicely o we were talking about CGIs, not kernels. there are some things for which C (and nearly any other given language) are very appropriate for. there are things they aren't. bulldozers are great for leveling off a plot of land, but sure suck for scooping ice cream with. i really don't have a problem with something like an OS kernel written in C, but writing CGIs in it isn't exactly a brainwave. if your C-slinging friend is a kernel hacker and that's somehow supposed to imbue his arguments with validity.. well.. the kernel isn't magic, nor are the people who write it. not even Linus. again, i'd love to hear his rational for choosing C for CGIs. i stand by what i said that C is much more dangerous due to memory management issues. this doesn't mean it isn't quite powerful and elegant, as well. it's just dangerous. right tool, right job. - -- Aaron J.
