I think the issues that caused you such grief was that you attempted to write 
to the HDD.  You stated that Windows XP was on the HDD which would 
most-likely be using NTFS.  Now to what I remember writing to a NTFS HDD can 
produce odd results.  Some people even recommend not to write to NTFS under 
Linux since Microsoft is closed source and writing to NTFS is not perfected 
in Linux.

I suggest you should do some reading into issues writing to NTFS from Linux.  
Best thing you should do is simply save your work to via samba or floppy and 
avoid wrting to the NTFS.
