Thanks Aaron. It looks like I have both.

In ~/Mail/ I have 6 actual folders with the sub directories that you listed (I 
have created all of these within the last few months or so), I've got 14 
hidden ones that start with a ., and I've got 106 plain text files (I guess 
these are mbox format).

I guess this has happened over the years, as I upgrade to new distros I've 
been copying my ~/Mail folder around. I guess KMail has changed its format 
once or twice.
