The comments here are basically spot on - I'm actually not sure what JetBrains' distro coverage is like, but as far as I know IntelliJ should work on most major distros. I've personally used it on Ubuntu and Suse. It's been a while since I used Java on a linux desktop (I'm on a Mac now too) but when I did it was definitely a better idea to download dependencies manually than to use the package managers, and I would absolutely recommend this for IntelliJ itself.
