I think it would be best if the author chimed in, but it looks like there has been done some good work on optimizing the development workflow when you're working with languages that need to be transpiled. There isn't much front-end optimization, but looks like it's on the todo-list. There's also the slightly misguided inclusion of gzip at this point in the stack. You want gzip for all your text content - including dynamically generated html and json - so adding it to the static assets here would either be not enough, or redundant work.
