At some point, you'll need to just pick a version and go with it. Once you reach a point where you're about to give up, email a stack trace to this list and we'll try to help. Until then simply giving a list of "this didn't work". Isn't really going to help, since there could be any number of things wrong. In my case, my failure to get started with Clojure ended up being because my machine redirects My Documents to a remote share on the network. There probably wasn't much wrong with the IDE I was using, it's just a miss-configuration on my part. Unless you pick something and try to stick with it for more than a few hours, you're not going to really get anywhere.
