I suppose you're right about "premature optimization," I wasn't really
using it in the right sense, and I apologize for "bandying."  What I
wanted to express is simply advocacy for an empirical approach to what
works well and what doesn't.

Also, to Daniel: Thanks for the link, criterium looks like a useful tool.
