I think the best way to banish these problems would be for clojure-mode
to have a list of "last known good" revisions for each of the dependent
projects. Then there could be a command to update each of the repos to
the last-known-good only.

I might experiment with this to see how well it would work. I've already
got an automated SLIME/etc installer, but it just trusts the latest
versions of everything.
