To the debate on whether there should be examples early in the text, here are my two cents:
When I click on something called "Learning [programming language]" I like to see a representative example of the syntax early on. If there's just text as far as the eye can see (that is, the first screen) it is off-putting for some reason. After all, it is a programming language.
